A pharmacophylogenetic study of the Berberidaceae (s.l.)

This paper deals with the correlation between phylogeny, chemical constituents and pharmaceutical effectiveness of the Berberidaceae (s.l.), i.e. a pharmacophylogenetic study of the family. Our results support the circumscription of the family recently proposed by Wu Z-Y et al., who considered that the Berberidaceae (s.l.) should be treated as four independent families: Nandinaceae, Berberidaceae (s.s.), Podophyllaceae and Leonticaceae. Phytochemically the monotypic family Nandinaceae is characterized by containing a rich spectrum of benzylisoquinoline types of alkaloids, such as berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhi- zine, coptisine, magnoflorine, domesticine, nandinine and protopine. The existence of the cyanogenic compound nandinin, biflavonoid amentoflavone and benzaldehyde-4-O-glucoside in this family indicates its relatively distant relation with the other three families. Nandina indica, the only species of the Nandinaceae, has been ethnopharmacologically mainly used as medicines for clearing heat and counteracting toxins, or as antitussive. The Berberidaceae (s.s.), which consist of Berberis L. and Mahonia Nutt., contain mainly benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, e.g., berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, columbamine, magnoflorine, particularly a higher content of biisobenzylquinoline alkaloids represented by berbamine and oxyacanthine. Ethnopharmacologically the plants in this family have been mainly used as medicines for clearing heat and counteracting toxins. In addition, plants in both Berberis and Mahonia have long been used as the main sources of the drugs berberine and berbamine. The Podophyllaceae can be divided into two tribes. The tribe Podophylleae, consisting of Podophyllum L. (including Sinopodophyllum Ying and Dysosma Woodson) and Diphylleia Michx., contains extensively various podophyllotoxin lignans, and the plants in this tribe have been used as the most important source for the manufacture of the anticancer drugs, i.e., podophyllotoxin's derivatives. Ethnopharmacologically, the plants have been mainly used as medicines for activating blood, revolving stasis, relieving swelling, removing toxin, and clearing heat. The tribe Epimedieae, consisting of Epimedium L., Vancouveria C. Morr. & Decne, Achlys DC., Jeffersonia Barton (Plagiorhegma Maxim.) and Ranzania T. Ito, has diversified chemical constituents. Both Epimedium and Vancouveria contain predominately bioactive icariin flavonoids, the characteristic chemical constituents of this group. Ethnopharmacologically the plants in Epimedium have been used as a male sexual tonic, and as medicines for dispelling wind and removing dampness. The phytochemistry of the remaining three genera Achlys, Jeffersonia and Ranzania has not been yet thoroughly investigated. Jeffersonia dubia has been used for the treatment of dysentery and eye pain caused by inflammation in the Korean minority nationality of northeast China. The Leonticaceae, including Gymnospermium Spach, Leontice L., Caulophyllum Michx and Bongardia C. A. Mey., phytochemically contain mainly β-amyrin triterpenoids and quinolizidine alkaloids, and have been used as medicines for activating blood, revolving stasis, dispelling wind and removing dampness.Decontaminated thianthrene disproportion. A taxonomic revision of the fern genus Lindsaea (Lindsaeaceae) from Hainan, China

The genus Lindsaea Dryand. from the Hainan Island, China, is taxonomically revised based on extensive field observations, herbarium studies and SEM photographs of spore samples. Eleven species and one variety of the genus Lindsaea are recognized, of which L. chingii C. Chr. is a new record to the Hainan Island. L. chienii Ching and L. orbiculata (Lam.) Mett. ex Kuhn are known to have wide range of morphological variation. L. annamensis K. U. Kramer and L. fengkaiensis B. S. Wang & S. H. Shi are reduced to synonyms of L. chienii, while L. hainanensis Ching and L. orbiculata var. commixta (Tagawa) K. U. Kramer are treated as new synonyms of L. orbiculata. A brief taxonomic history of Lindsaea in Hainan and in China, a key to species of Hainan Lindsaea, habitat and distribution data for each taxon are given.

A phylogenetic analysis of the genus Actinodaphne (Lauraceae) was conducted using sequences from the nrDNA (nuclear ribosomal DNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and external transcribed spacer (ETS) regions. Maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis methods were employed to analyse the data sets (ITS, ETS and ITS/ETS). All analyses suggested that the sampled Actinodaphne species were not monophyletic, clustering instead as several clades amongst other genera in the tribe Laureae. This result indicates that the generic delimitations between Actinodaphne and related genera need to be reevaluated, and that inflorescence features, which are mostly consistent with the current molecular inferences, might be the both important and reliable characters for their redefinition. However, because of the relatively small number of taxa sampled, and conflicts between the separate analyses, more detailed studies are required to clarify the relationships which emerged in our study and to allow for more precise generic delimitation and hypotheses about phylogeny in Actinodaphne. Genomic evolutions were characterized by 31 ISSR (inter-simple sequence repeat) primers among 23 species in the genus Aegilops. The results indicate that the genome constituents of allopolyploid species had changed greatly through evolution compared with their ancestral diploid species. Genome U showed little alterations in U-containing allopolyploids, while others had undergone changes after allopolyploidization. In addition, genome U also displayed strong assimilation effect when it coexisted with other genomes, and the other genomes changed to varying degrees. The evolutionary changes of these genomes were discussed.

The relationship between Asplenium yunnanense Franch. and Asplenium lushanense C. Chr. has long been in dispute, and here was evaluated based on the sequence analysis of chloroplast rbcL gene, trnL-F and rps4-trnS intergenic spacers. No sequence difference in the studied chloroplast DNA regions was found between Asplenium lushanense and A. yunnanense, but some nucleotide differences in the corresponding DNA fragments were found among other Asplenium species. So, A. yunnanense and A. lushanense cannot be distinguishable in terms of chloroplast DNA sequences, and the very close relationship between them is further affirmed based on the evidence from molecular data.

Chromosomes of 13 species in the genus Dryopteris Adanson (Dryopteridaceae) from Yunnan, China have been counted. The numbers in four species, D. alpestris Tagawa (2n=82), D. habaensis Ching (2n=82), D. lachoongensis (Bedd.) Nayar & Kaur (2n=82), and D. yungtzeensis Ching (2n=82), were reported for the first time. The triploid apomict D. rosthornii (Diels) C. Chr. (2n=123), the tetraploid apomict D. wallichiana (Spreng.) Hylander (‘n’=164, 2n=164) and the diploid apomict D. yoroii Serizawa (2n=82) represent three new cytotypes. Our results support the establishment of the section Caespitosae S. G. Lu, and indicate a high percentage of the diploid apomict cytotype in Dryopteris from the Himalayan region of China. The phenomenon of the presence of different cytotypes in a same plant of fern species is discussed.  Decontaminated thianthrene disproportion. Techniques for collecting and measuring floral nectar are essential in many studies of pollination biology. In order to test the effectiveness of different methods for collecting nectar from small flowers, we used microcapillary tubes, calibrated syringes, wicks and centrifugation to collect floral nectar in five species (Sagittaria trifolia L., Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hyland, Dolichos lablab L., Rostellularia procumbens (L.) Nees, and Polygonum caespitosum L.). We also used hand-held refractometer to analyze the nectar sugar content. The results have shown that the applicability of one method varied with the floral shape and structure, nectar volume and the nectar location. It is better to use different methods to measure different flowers. For studies in the field, the techniques of using capillary tubes to collect nectar and hand-held refractometer to measure sugar content are recommended. If the flowers are too small to collect with capillary tubes, we suggest centrifugation as an alternative method to extract nectar in the laboratory.Decontaminated thianthrene disproportion. In this paper, the status of Clematis eriopoda Maxim. and sect. Atragenopsis Boiss. is discussed, and the species status of the former and the sectional status of the latter are recognized; two species (C. wenxianensis W. T. Wang, C. malacoclada W. T. Wang) and one variety (C. hastata Finet & Gagnep. var. micrantha W. T. Wang) are described as new; one species, C. tubulosa Turcz., which has been erroneously relegated into the synonymy under C. heracleifolia DC. by Fang and Wang for a long time, is reinstated; C. heracleifolia var. ichangensis Rehd. & Wils. is transferred to C. tubulosa, and a new combination, C. tubulosa var. ichangensis (Rehd. & Wils.) A new species of Gesneriaceae, Chiritopsis lingchuanensis Yan Liu & Y. G. Wei, which was found to grow in a karst cave in Lingchuan County, Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to C. bipinnatifida W. T. Wang in having cymes lax-flowered, the corolla white, distinctly 2-lipped, the posterior lip three times shorter than the anterior one, and the staminodes 3, but differs by having leaves undivided and stamens pubescent. The new species is also similar to C. repanda W. T. Wang in the leaf shape, but differs in its corolla indistinctly 2-lipped, the posterior lip subequal to the anterior one, stamens glabrous, and the staminodes 2.

A new species of the genus Rubus (Rosaceae) from Wuchuan County, Guizhou Province, China, R. wuchuanensis S. Z. He, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to R. wuzhianus L. T. Aster ageratoides var. pendulus W. P. Li & G. X. Chen, a new variety of Aster (Asteraceae) from Shimen County, northwestern Hunan, China, is described. The variety is similar to A. ageratoides var. laticorymbus (Vant.) Hand.-Mazz., from which it differs by having pendent stem, basal leaves and lower stem leaves purple beneath, stem leaves linear, hispid above, and broader phyllaries. The new variety is also possibly similar to A. ageratoides var. micranthus Ling in the linear leaves and white ligules, but differs by having the phyllaries green at apex, 1.25–1.75 mm wide, and the obvious creeping underground rhizomes.Decontaminated thianthrene disproportion.
